Systers Community

Systers Community:

Hello, I am Anirudh Raju of Eighth grade studying at Little Flower Public School, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. I study at a school where both boys and girls are there. This is the sole branch of our school in Bengaluru but there is one branch in every major city of India i.e Hyderabad, New Delhi, Mumbai etc. The total number of boys in our school is about 1100 whereas the total number of girls in our school is 950. I am now going to explain the importance and greatness of Systers Community. This is for my participation in GCI for Systers.

Systers Community is an organisation that provides private and safe online forum for women involved in technical computing. Anitha Borg, along with 12 other women created Systers. Their Moto is 'Women transform technology, technology transforms the world'. Systers has created an app called 'PowerUp' for this purpose.

Anitha Borg had only one major goal of getting more and more number of women into the field of computer science. The community is so well developed that people help each other through career decisions and professional challenges.

Today, it has over 7,500 women in 65 countries. There are also 23 affinity groups hosted for women technologists to connect with each other. This is massive and will also have a massive impact on the society. In India, especially North India, women are treated very badly. They are threatened to maintain only the household jobs and are forbidden from going to work.

It is true that this issue is decreasing by the day. Women there have started to work. When I visited there, I found people interested in Computer Science and Arts. This initiative will give them a push for their zeal. In our school, there is a 'Computer Club' where students very bright in the subject is selected. Around 8 children are there in this club this year. It was indeed a very good moment when I saw a girl joining in as the Eighth person this year. This is the transformation the world expects and Systers is a fuel for this transformation. Anitha Borg quoted:

Here's a graph representing the increase in the number of women technologists in Bengaluru, India.

Systers community has developed several initiatives and special interest groups. Some of their initiatives are:
Pass It On Awards: This initiative is majorly funded by sisters and other groups where the winners are allowed to "pass on" their expertise by funding and supporting other women in tech.
Systers Open Source Projects: One of the major example is the PowerUp app.

Some of their Special Interest Groups are:
Entrepreneurs: Systers allows women to interact with female entrepreneurs in IT.
There are many other Special Interest groups for the benefit of women technologists in the community.

In my perspective, I feel it is a good idea. I expect women to also compete me in Computers. I like this community as it's very unique and worthy. Its unique as it gives women a chance and worthy because women get advantage from this community.

Here's a graph for the different professions per hundred women are in Bengaluru, India:

From the above graph, we can clearly see that the women in technology in Bengaluru is slowly increasing.

Thank you Systers for giving me a chance to present this blog to you. I feel that Systers is doing good. If you people can get a clear hold on India, it will work out very well.
